Christmas has always been my favorite holiday. Baking treats, wrapping gifts and decorating the house are time honored traditions and doing these activities brings joy to me and my family. As a decorator, I also enjoy changing how I style my home for the holiday from year to year. However, with 9 large bins of indoor Christmas decor (and 2 more bins of just gift wrap and ribbon! ) filling up shelves in my garage, I have become very selective about making any more purchases, preferring instead to use what I already have in new and creative ways. My method for keeping things fresh is easy- I mix my everyday decor with Christmas. Not only does this save money, but it saves me time from packing and unpacking things, and storage space! Here are a few ideas you may want to try using items you probably already own or have easy access to:

  1. Fill a large bowl or vessel with a variety of glass Christmas balls, embellish with pinecones, other vase filler or snips of greenery- faux or real. Place on a coffee table for a touch of holiday or use as a centerpiece on the dining table, flanked by candle sticks or votives.
  2. Create a minimal table top “tree” with a few bare branches (I clip mine off of trees from my backyard) placed in a vase and hang small, dangling ornaments. I have some mini, mercury glass pinecones I like to use and the effect is lovely! Add a satin ribbon tied around the vase for an extra bit of luxe color.
  3. If you’re going to invest in purchasing a wreath, consider one made of boxwood or magnolia leaves. Real or faux, this type of greenery looks great year-round on a door or window. Just change the color ribbon it hangs from with the seasons.
  4. Who says presents need to be wrapped with Christmas themed paper and ribbons? Whether solid or patterned, any pretty wrapping can be used for gifts under the tree- as long as the paper doesn’t have a message displayed on it like “Happy Birthday” or “Congratulations”! Use the paper you have on hand or purchase something that is non-holiday, and when Christmas is over, that wrap is ready to be used for gift giving throughout the year.

Decorating for Christmas shouldn’t be stressful, it should be enjoyable. Using items you have on hand means you save money and time- which will allow you to enjoy the holiday more.
